Sea to Sea Day 6 Mulukuku to Matiguas

Jan 17th, 2009 by Mary | 0

Day 6 – 54 miles – half the day on dirt roads and then we hit pavement…at last!!!

We rode for 9 hours and faced the largest elevation changes of the journey. We climbed 620 feet over a 6.7 mile stretch and then 3.5 miles later, we climbed another 635 feet in a 1.5 mile stretch. The experienced cyclists in our group guessed that we were on about a 12% grade on the last leg of the climb. Ugh…that was hard!

Several people fell and some bike chains broke along the way. A little later in the day one of our riders was traveling at high speeds, hit a dog, and flew off his bike. Even though he was wearing a helmet, he sustained a minor concussion and also hurt his shoulder. We found out yesterday that he has to have reconstructive shoulder surgery next week. What a bummer.

This was the one day we actually stopped for lunch at a little outdoor restaurant.

We were served fresh, hot, sweet corn tortillas with homemade cuajada (soft white cheese) and sour cream. They were delicious!
