Tulsa Day 4-5

Jan 24th, 2010 by Mary | 0

The days are flying by. On Saturday morning Yakelin woke up with dizziness and a bad headache. After taking Ibuprofen and eating breakfast, the headache subsided. She noted that her teeth weren’t hurting as much as they had been before, so after talking with Dr. Ray, we decided to hold off seeing him until Sunday. Sally picked us up from the house after lunchtime and took us to a uniform shop where Yakelin picked out a new uniform for her 7 year-old girl. Thanks Sally!

After the uniform store, we hit Target (oh, how I love Target!) and found some great deals on a belt, bras, and a pair of earrings for Yakelin. These were some of the top priority items on Yakelin’s wish list. Later on we went to the Kolker’s house for a BBQ dinner. Most of the Kirk Nicaragua medical team that met Yakelin in April was there. We had a great time!

Yakelin really enjoyed talking with Leda at the dinner. Leda is from Costa Rica and speaks Spanish. Her warm and welcoming personality has really helped Yakelin feel loved. Thanks Leda!

Great news! Yakelin was able to talk with her children today using Skype! I was sitting right by the computer while they were talking and it was great to her their squeals of laughter and excitement. They seemed to be doing well. After going to the Kirk’s traditional church service, we went to see Dr. Ray and he smoothed out her bite. She says her teeth feel better now. Thanks Dr. Ray! We ran past Wal-Mart on the way home and made some 15-bean soup for dinner. During dinner prep, Yakelin spent about an hour practicing some English phrases such as “Good Morning”, “How are you?”, and “Excuse me”.

Monday morning we have our last pre-op appointment and will meet Dr. Romano. We hope to better understand surgical options for Yakelin and are praying that he will have clarity in which option is best for her considering her future in Nicaragua. Surgery is tentatively set for Thursday.
